International and Area Studies M6A: Elementary Amharic, I A STD M6A

(Same as African American Studies M9A.) Lecture, five hours. Course M6A is requisite to M6B, which is requisite to M6C. Introduction to Amharic, Semitic language that is official language of Ethiopia. Coverage of basic Amharic grammar, with equal emphasis on reading, writing, conversation, and comprehension. P/NP or letter grading.

More About The Course

Amharic is the national language of Ethiopia, spoken by over 22 million people and many millions more Ethiopians and others around the world. The Beginning Amharic course provides basic skills in conversation, reading and writing in Amharic. The course utilizes communicative and immersive language learning method where minimal English is used in the classroom.

Students will learn to read and write using the Geez alphabet, and practice applied linguistics using relational conversations relating to daily social activities pertaining to personal and family activities, hospitality, business, education and other relevant routine discussion topics as they immerse themselves into the Amharic language.

Dr. Abraham Adhanom has been teaching African Languages Amharic and Tigrinya at UCLA since 2003. He was born and raised in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Prior to his move to the U.S., Dr. Abraham worked as an engineer and technical team leader for the Geneva, Switzerland based global organization Lutheran World Federation where he managed international development projects in Ethiopia and Eritrea. He comes to UCLA with extensive academic background and professional consulting expertise. Dr. Abraham holds PhD in Management, Masters in International Business, and Bachelors in Computer Science. He has been actively engaged in immigrant community development and advocacy projects in the Los Angeles area for nearly 20 years.   Dr. Abraham Adhanom has been teaching African Languages Amharic and Tigrinya at UCLA since 2003.
